43rd
ANNUAL CROSS STATE TRAIL RIDE AUGUST 2011
The plans to use a field near Otter
Creek State Forest in New York have fallen through so we are moving the
ride. We are in the process of obtaining the necessary permits for Old
Hill Village north of the Franklin Falls Dam. This area is under the
control of the Army Corp of Engineers and under lease to New Hampshire Dept
of Recreation and Environmental Development (DRED) We last stayed here
in 2003.
In 1937, the residents of Hill NH were told that their village would be
sacrificed to create a flood control area to prevent future flooding of the
Pemigewasset and Merrimack Rivers that had nearly destroyed cities and towns
to the south from Manchester NH to Haverhill, MA. By 1941, the move to
higher ground was completed and the Franklin Falls Dam was operational.
The old town remains frozen in time with streets, foundations, fields, fence
lines and hedge rows still visible.
Once plans are finalized, we will publish the particulars on the ride so
stay tuned.
Ride managers will be Pat Darmofal and Diana Leavitt.
Ride information and entry forms will become available to members early in May of 2012
This is a members only ride.
